Blair Talks – by Blair Quane on 11th June 2024
Today I’m going to cover two work from home jobs that will actually make enough money to replace your current full time job, if you do them properly.
Firstly, lets talk a little bit about work from home myths and realities.
Work From Home Jobs; Myths and Realities
Yes, you get more flexibility and variety working from home. You don’t need to drive to the office every day and it can be beneficial in terms of being in a more comfortable and productive space at home.
However, you do need to work and work hard to be successful, especially in the beginning. There are a lot of elements to working for yourself and working from home. You need to be disciplined and avoid the temptations that working from home jobs can bring.
It can be extremely challenging to run your own schedule without someone (the boss) telling you what to do. You will need to plan well and execute well.
So, once you’ve digested the above, then we can continue.
My Picks for Work From Home Jobs
So, the two options I am going to outline today are the two that allow you to truly begin working at home without turning your home into a storage shed of products or a showroom for Tupperware. The two models I am going to discuss are both online options and are based on owning a website.
Work From Home Jobs Option 1 – Buy a Website
So this option involves looking around for a website that is already monetized (making profit) and buying that website for you to manage. Sounds simple eh?
Well, not really. But it’s not impossible.
There are a large amount of website marketplaces online now which have thousands of websites for sale every day. Examples of these are Flippa, Empire Flippers, FE International, BizBuySell and the list goes on.
These marketplaces offer a huge amount of different types of online selling from ecommerce, advertising, affiliate and so on. So, you can look for websites to buy that suit your taste and stye of business.
Pros of Buying a Website
- You get a work from home job that’s making you money immediately.
- The business is already working and set up so you don’t need to learn everything at once.
- You don’t need to try and fail with a product or niche.
- It’s probably the simplest way to start working from home immediately.
Cons of Buying a Website
- It costs a good sum of money to buy. The more profit it makes, the more expensive it is to buy.
- You’ll need a lump sum of savings to do this method.
- It may not be as good as the seller states and you could see a downturn in the business once you take over.
- It will require you to know a bit about the niche and running the website to be able to take it over easily.
- It’s not something you’ve created so it may not give you the same satisfaction as building your own site.
Work From Home Jobs Option 2 – Build a Website
This option is where instead of buying an existing website, you set about building one from scratch. Now it’s important to split this one into two distinctive groups;
- You actually build the website yourself
- You pay someone to build the website for you.
Both options are similar in that it’s staring from scratch but they differ in that when you build it yourself, this is the most cost effective way of doing it.
For reference, I’ve provided a typical example of the costs to do the options we’re talking about, so you can get a feel for the comparative differences:
- Buy a website $100,000
- Have someone build you a website $30,000
- Build your own website $1,000 (buying software, hosting etc)
Pros of Building Your Own Website
- It’s cheaper.
- You’re in control of what you’re doing and the end result.
- You can claim it as your own creation.
- It is very rewarding to achieve this.
Cons of Building Your Own Website
- It takes a lot longer (possibly 6 months to 2 years) to get finished and make money.
- You’ll need cash reserves to pay your way for a while until the website can earn enough to pay you.
- There’s a lot more risk as the site’s not proven – only a small % of sites ever make enough money to pay a good wage.
How to Choose an Option?
These are the two best options for how to get your very own work from home job. Which route you choose will depend a lot on your personal situation and you may wish to refer to these questions and suggestions:
- Do you have a good amount of cash saved away? If yes then both options are available to you.
- Do you want to leave your job right now but need to pay your own weekly wage from day one? If yes, then buying a website is a good option.
- Do you not have a lot of cash and can phase out your current job by doing it part-time whilst working on your home website job? If yes, then building your own site may be a good route for you.
- Do you have a real passion for a niche that you want to pursue? If yes, then building a site will be the best option for you as you will have full creative control.
- Do you have some skills in building a website? Then building your own website may be just the right choice for you.
Conclusion
Whatever option you choose for your work from home job, the key thing to do is to ensure you assess your own situation and make notes on this. Then look to marry up those notes with one of the options in this article. Do your due diligence on whatever option you choose.
Working from home can have many advantages, but also disadvantages as we’ve discussed. One consistent thing is that you do need money to do this, either via savings or continuing to work elsewhere part time to fund the start of your home business. Without money or a funding avenue, none of the options we’ve discussed today will be able to be done, so this should sit as a good reality check for anyone considering a work from home job.
I hope you’ve gained some useful information about work from home jobs and the main options available to you, in my professional opinion.
